Gardener - Horticulture Department

NATURE OF WORK

The Gardener ($8.80 / hour) performs a variety of tasks related to the planting, cultivating, and caring for ornamental plants and shrubs used to beautify the Zoo grounds.  A Gardener assumes primary responsibility for flower and shrub planting and maintenance of a specified area. The Gardener meets and reports to the Horticulture Supervisor both verbally and in writing of work accomplished and in progress on a weekly basis for project and schedule updates. The Gardener reports to the Horticulture Supervisor.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Establish and maintain positive, cooperative, and effective working relations with fellow employees.
  • Constantly exhibit a customer service attitude, a smile, and an obvious interest in visitor comfort and service.
  • Communicate with the public in a courteous and tactful manner and assist visitors with questions and directions to various areas of the Zoo.  Address the visitor - do not wait to be asked.
  • Remove trash and debris from public areas; i.e. pick up litter whenever you see it.
  • Prepare ground for planting and participate in planting, cultivating, fertilizing, watering, and pruning of flowers, shrubs and trees.
  • Propagate plant material.
  • Water and care for plants in open beds; transplant decorative plants, flowers, shrubs and trees; plant special flower designs and beds.
  • Fertilize and condition soil for different types of flowers and plants.
  • Inspect for pests, diseases, or other deteriorating agents and take necessary steps for their eradication.
  • Load/unload trucks and trailers as needed and able to push a loaded wheelbarrow over uneven terrain.
  • Plant, mow, pickup debris, and maintain specified area.
  • Understand and be able to maintain watering requirements of a diverse plant collection.
  • Any and all other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Able to start and safely operate powered equipment such as mowers, tillers, hedgers, string weed trimmers, chain saws, and motor vehicles.
  • Able to effectively follow written and oral instructions.
  • Able to follow landscape design concepts.
  • Able to repeatedly and safely lift 50 lb. bags from ground level, carry them twenty feet, place them on a pickup truck tail gate, then return them to the point of origin.
  • Able to work at or above ground level planting and caring for bedding plants, trees, shrubs, lawns, and flowers while bending, standing, kneeling, squatting, lifting, twisting, reaching, for extended periods of time.
  • Able to safely and effectively use standard gardening hand tools such as hoes, rakes, shovels, handsaws, shears, clippers, loppers, and pole pruner.
  • Able to safely apply fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides if required.
  • Able to withstand extreme outdoor temperatures typical of south Texas and extreme working conditions.
  • Knowledge of the kinds of materials required in growing varied plants, various types of fertilizers, and methods of use.
  • Knowledge of tropical, sub-tropical plants, and familiarity with flowers, trees, plants, and shrubs common to south Texas.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to work weekends, holidays and occasional after-hour assignments.
  • Associate degree in conservation, plant science, biology or related field.
  • Two-year experience in the care of plants, flowers, shrubs, trees, and lawns in a professional setting.
  • Substitute Ratio: Two years of related experience may be substituted for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years experience.
  • Valid Texas driver’s license.
