Butterflies Exhibit Interpreter – Horticulture Department
Starting pay: $7.44/hour part-time
Effective immediately a Butterflies Exhibit Interpreter position is available in the Horticulture Department. Exhibit Interpreters perform a variety of tasks related to providing educational and safety information to the public through informal interpretations. Interpreters may use exhibit graphics and live animals to deliver conservation education messages within the exhibit. Butterfly Exhibit Interpreters report to the Horticulture Curator.
Essential Functions
- Establish and maintain positive, cooperative, and effective working relations with fellow employees.
- Constantly exhibit a customer service attitude, a smile, and an obvious interest in visitor comfort and service.
- Communicate with the public in a courteous and tactful manner and assist visitors with questions and directions to various areas of the Zoo. Address the visitor - do not wait to be asked.
- Remove trash and debris from public areas; i.e. pick up litter whenever you see it.
- Attend to the entrance and exit doors of the exhibit, ensuring there is always one person at each, and assist our guests to enter by opening/closing doors.
- Explain the rules of the Butterfly House to all entering the exhibit.
- Provide accurate and enthusiastic educational information to everyone who enters the exhibit and to visitors around the zoo.
- Enforce the rules and regulations established within exhibits as well as around the zoo.
- Maintain the cleanliness of the exhibit area
- Exchange information with supervisory staff and coworkers on a regular basis.
- Provide accurate observations, evaluations and reports about incidents between visitors within the exhibit, animal issues within the exhibit, and conditions and/or maintenance needs within the exhibit.
- Seek and maintain a strong knowledge base concerning the exhibit and information the education department or exhibit Curator provides for dissemination.
- Perform any other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to work comfortably among a wide variety of people.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to establish and maintain positive, cooperative, and effective working relations with fellow employees.
- Ability to withstand outdoor labor in extreme temperatures typical of South Texas.
- Ability to work safely around delicate insects.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English, presenting biological and historical information in a professional manner.
- Ability to see clearly 50 feet away.
Minimum Qualifications
- Strong desire to work with the public.
- Ability to work weekends, holidays and occasional after-hour assignments.
- Strong customer service background as indicated by educational background and/or previous experience.
