Fun Farm Attendant (PT) – Mammal Department
Starting pay $7.35/hour

Effective immediately a Fun Farm Attendant (PT) position (starting pay $7.35/hour) is available in the Mammal Department. Fun Farm Attendants perform a variety to tasks related to the handling and care of animals and their environments and providing educational information to the public through structured, professional presentations.  The Fun Farm Attendant reports to the department supervisor.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Establish and maintain positive, cooperative, and effective working relations with fellow employees.
  • Constantly exhibit a customer service attitude, a smile, and an obvious interest in visitor comfort and service.
  • Communicate with the public in a courteous and tactful manner and assist visitors with questions and directions to various areas of the Zoo.  Address the visitor - do not wait to be asked.
  • Remove trash and debris from public areas; i.e. pick up litter whenever you see it.
  • Assist with overall development of Fun Farm activities and topics.
  • Assist in treating zoo animals in accordance with instructions of a supervisor or zoo veterinarian.
  • Observing, evaluating and reporting animal behavior and condition of animals and reporting to a supervisor on a daily basis.
  • Performing routine and special duties involved in the daily care and maintenance of animals in captivity.
  • Exchanging information with the supervisory staff and coworkers on a regular basis.
  • Daily cleaning and maintaining animal enclosures, service areas, and holding facilities using rake, shovel, wheelbarrow, and other tools as required.
  • Providing assistance in maintenance of animal enclosures or animal transfer.
  • Providing educational information to the public several times per day in a professional manner.
  • Any other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to work safely around delicate, wild and dangerous animals.
  • Ability to create, plan, implement, or execute a variety of activities in the Fun Farm.
  • Sufficient delicacy to handle and display for presentation common domestic animals.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with fellow employees.
  • Ability to withstand heavy outdoor labor in extreme temperatures typical of south Texas.
  • Ability to lift heavy (60 lb) objects from ground level, move approximately 10', and to perform this function at least five times in succession without danger of injury.
  • Ability to safely maneuver a loaded wheelbarrow (100 lbs) over uneven terrain.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, presenting biological and historical information about animals in a professional manner.
  • Ability to deal effectively with the public.
  • Ability to operate light motor vehicles.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to work weekends, holidays and occasional after-hour assignments.
  • Valid Texas driver's license.
  • Strong desire to work with animals as indicated by educational background and/or previous experience.
