Ground Sweeper (PT) - Maintenance



Nature of Work

Effective immediately, the zoo has a part-time Ground Sweeper position (starting pay $7.25/hr.) vacant in the maintenance department. A Grounds Sweeper is responsible for maintaining cleanliness of the Zoo grounds and buildings. Usually work is performed under the immediate direction of a supervisor, but may be performed under general supervision once learned. Grounds Sweepers report to the Maintenance Superintendent or Maintenance Supervisor.

Essential Functions:

  • Establish and maintain positive, cooperative, and effective working relations with fellow employees.
  • Constantly exhibit a customer service attitude, a smile, and an obvious interest in visitor comfort and service.
  • Communicate with the public in a courteous and tactful manner and assist visitors with questions and directions to various areas of the Zoo. Address the visitor - do not wait to be asked.
  • Remove trash and debris from public areas; i.e. pick up litter whenever you see it.
  • Operate leaf blowers, power sweepers, and pressure washers.
  • Operate tug and trailer.
  • Change trash bags in trashcans throughout the Zoo.
  • Use water hose to cleanse certain areas.
  • Check lavatories and ensure they are stocked with essential supplies (paper towels, toilet paper, soap. etc.)
  • Remove graffiti in public areas to include lavatories.
  • Report any holes in asphalt or walkways and any other safety hazard.
  • Clean debris from the tops of buildings and gutters.
  • Set up and tear down of tables and chairs for meetings.
  • Any and all other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to deal effectively and politely with the public.
  • Knowledge of the hand tools and simple equipment used in performing assigned jobs.
  • Ability to develop skill in the operation of power equipment used in performing assigned jobs.
  • Sufficient physical strength, coordination and agility to lift from ground level, move ten feet, and return to point of origin medium weight (50 lb.) objects.
  • Sufficient physical strength, coordination and agility to start, stop, and efficiently operate gasoline engine power sweepers.
  • Able to work outdoors, for extended periods of time, under extreme adverse weather conditions typical of south Texas.
  • Ability to understand, foresee, and apply safety precautions applicable to the task.
  • Ability to perform work tasks while bending, standing, kneeling, squatting, lifting, twisting, reaching or sitting.
  • Able to read, write and understand English

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ability to work weekends, holidays and occasional after-hours assignments.
  • Valid Texas driver's license.
  • Able to read, write and understand English
  • Prior experience with floor buffer
  • Prior experience with cleaning chemicals.
