SAN ANTONIO (May 6, 2009) - The San Antonio Zoo, in conjunction with other AZA (Association of Zoos and Aquarium) institutional members and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will celebrate International Migratory Bird Day on Saturday, May 9 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Zoo grounds.
International Migratory Bird Day (IMBD) is the brainchild of the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center. The Center is dedicated to fostering greater understanding, appreciation, and protection of the grand phenomena of bird migration. IMBD celebrates the return of millions of migratory birds from their southern non-breeding grounds to their northern nesting habitats. Organizers hope the special programs will increase public awareness of the need for bird conservation.
The San Antonio Zoo, will be celebrated IMBD with special activities like how to build a birdhouse, bird close-ups, pelican feedings, and keeper talks to encourage interest in conservation by the young and young at heart. Other San Antonio area plant and wildlife conservation organizations will be on hand to answer questions and offer information. For more information, or to schedule an interview, please contact Debbie Rios-Vanskike at the number listed above or log on to www.sazoo-aq.org
