The San Antonio Zoo Eagle celebrates its 50th Birthday anniversary with a dedication ceremony and an official christening of a new miniature train, “The Lukey J,” on Thursday, June 14 at 10:00 a.m. at the train depot.
Since 1956, the Brackenridge Eagle has chugged along the miniature tracks skirting the banks of the San Antonio River, as it makes its way through one of San Antonio's most popular parks. It has braved several derailments, a couple of collisions, and even a modern-day train robbery during the summer of 1970. The Depot currently operates two trains, both built in the early 1980s. The additional train, which is a detailed replica of the 1863 original, will allow the Zoo to run three trains during peak periods.
Thanks to a major gift from Howard and Betty Halff and other generous donors, The Lukey J, named after the Halff’s grandson, will roll its way around the park with passengers for the first time on June 14. Members of the media are invited to join us at the 50th Birthday celebration and dedication ceremony to honor the generous sponsors and supporters who helped bring The Lukey J to the San Antonio Zoo.
