Job Title: Security Officer (Full-Time)
Starting Pay: $8.25 per hour
Effective immediately a Security Officer position is available the Security Department. Security Officers are responsible for patrolling the Zoo grounds and surrounding areas to prevent theft, violence and other infractions; and to assure operating equipment such as pumps, blowers, heaters, air conditioners, and fans are performing as required. Security Officers will render first aid, maintain public calm during emergency situations, and provide assistance to emergency personnel as required. Security Officers report to the Chief of Security.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Establish and maintain positive, cooperative, and effective working relations with fellow employees.
- Constantly exhibit a customer service attitude, a smile, and an obvious interest in visitor comfort and service.
- Communicate with the public in a courteous and tactful manner and assist visitors with questions and directions to various areas of the Zoo. Address the visitor - do not wait to be asked.
- Remove trash and debris from public areas; i.e. pick up litter whenever you see it.
- Continuously patrol all areas of the zoo, and occasionally the adjacent areas to prevent theft and vandalism. Ensure use of proper lighting while patrolling at night.
- Provide verbal information to relief Security Officers.
- Provide proper written documentation on graveyard and swing shifts in the Security log every hour on the hour, especially incidents and accidents.
- Ensure night security keys are intact and in the proper order.
- Inspect Security equipment daily.
- Inspect fire extinguishers for charge level, location, and ease of access; take corrective action as required; and report findings to appropriate supervisor.
- Inspect construction sites on, and adjacent to, Zoo property to assure protective barriers are in place and no obvious public safety hazards exist.
- Assure electrically and manually operated support systems, including pumps, valves, switches and gauges are properly set and functioning.
- Respond to calls for assistance from the public and employees including emergency response injury codes.
- Perform first aid and CPR as necessary.
- Prepare accident reports legibly and in a timely manner.
- Any and all other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Able to follow oral and written instructions.
- Able to communicate clearly in English.
- Able to thoroughly, completely, understandably, and correctly complete accident reports.
- Sufficient strength, agility and stamina to perform basic first aid, including cardio-pulmonary resuscitation on children and adults.
- Sufficient strength, agility and stamina to patrol the entire zoo grounds, on foot, during an eight hour shift under weather extremes typical to south Texas.
- Able to handle, calmly and effectively, various types of public contact situations.
- Able to contact San Antonio Park Police, SAPD, SAFD, Bexar County Sheriff, EMS, or other emergency agency to clearly, calmly, distinctly and correctly report an emergency requiring assistance.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Ability to work weekends, holidays, and after-hour assignments.
- High school graduate or equivalent GED certificate.
- One year of security related work.
- Valid Texas driver's license.
- Certification as a first aid and CPR provider.
- Spanish fluency is highly desirable.
