Summer Camp Assistant – Education Center Seasonal


Effective immediately there is an opening for Summer Camp Assistant. The Summer Camp Assistant is responsible for organizing, overseeing and assisting in all aspects of summer camp. This includes but is not limited to: monitoring camper check-in and check-out; assisting children during programs and while touring in the Zoo; presenting information; setting up and breaking down of crafts and activities; procuring animals used during camp and ensuring the well-being of campers. The Summer Camp Assistant should exhibit a caring and friendly attitude and attempt to inspire knowledge, appreciation and action within campers. The Summer Camp Assistant reports to the Education Curator - Programs and works closely with the Programs Coordinator, Summer Camp Instructor, Teen Volunteers and other Education staff.

Essential Functions:

  • Establish and maintain positive, cooperative, and effective working relations with fellow employees and docents/volunteers.
  • Constantly exhibit a customer service attitude, a smile, and an obvious interest in guest comfort and service.
  • Communicate with the public in a courteous and tactful manner and assist guests with questions and directions to various areas of the Zoo. Address the guests - do not wait to be asked.
  • Remove trash and debris from public areas; i.e. pick up litter whenever you see it.
  • Be knowledgeable of all Zoo safety policies/procedures and assure compliance.
  • Monitor location, safety and well being of all participants attending camp.
  • Setup, organize and supervise daily camper check-in and check-out.
  • Assist with presentations to campers as needed.
  • Assist with the supervision and safety of summer camp tours and activities.
  • Attend the San Antonio Zoo’s orientation and animal handling training as required.
  • Become proficient in animal handling and present animals in accordance with established protocol.
  • Manage and maintain proper protocol and procedures for all acquisitions and interactions with summer camp presentation animals.
  • Responsible for program material set-up and clean up (e.g. crafts supplies, food items)
  • Monitor the preparation and distribution of snacks.
  • Assist with the supervision of restroom and lunch breaks as needed.
  • Maintain current knowledge and status of the Zoo’s living collections.
  • Adhere to all policies set forth by the San Antonio Zoo.
  • Enforce all San Antonio Zoo restrictions and limitations.
  • Any and all other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities :
  • Strong communication skills. Ability to express oneself clearly and concisely.
  • Ability to relate effectively and engagingly with the public, especially very young children and older adults.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Knowledge and experience in conservation education or science is preferred.
  • Strong desire to work with people.
Minimum Qualifications :
  • High School diploma or equivalent required. Some college preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of biology, zoology, and the ability to organize, plan, collaborate and implement educational presentations.
  • Experience working with group programs (e.g., camp, scouts, and children’s programs).
  • Ability to work weekdays between June 6th and August 12th.
