Train Laborer
Starting pay: $7.25/hour



Nature of Work

A Train Laborer ( starting pay $7.25) is responsible for the safe operation and for manual labor tasks in a wide variety of job assignments pertaining to the train. Work is performed under the immediate direction of a craftsman or supervisor, but many routine and repetitive tasks may be completed without difficulty and under general supervision once learned. The Train Laborer reports to the Maintenance Supervisor.

Essential Functions:

  • Establish and maintain positive, cooperative, and effective working relations with fellow employees.
  • Constantly exhibit a customer service attitude, a smile, and an obvious interest in visitor comfort and service.
  • Communicate with the public in a courteous and tactful manner and assist visitors with questions and directions to various areas of the Zoo. Address the visitor - do not wait to be asked.
  • Remove trash and debris from public areas; i.e. pick up litter whenever you see it.
  • Operating jack hammer, paving breaker, or cement mixer;
  • Constructing concrete forms, mixing and pouring concrete;
  • Preparing and patching driveway, walkway and train crossing surfaces;
  • Operate safely Zoo vehicles including dump, pick up, and flatbed trucks; front end loader, forklift and the train.
  • Assist to assure the train and its equipment are kept in safe and proper repair.
  • Assist in maintaining the Zoo train, vehicles, power equipment, and buildings;
  • Maintain train railroad tracks including tie and track replacement.
  • Assist various craftspersons.
  • Take ride tickets from the public.
  • ➢ Drive train and assure rider safety by taking necessary measures to assure the train rider’s behavior does not endanger themselves, zoo employees, or other train passengers.
  • Any and all other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities :
  • Able to read, write, and understand English.
  • Ability to deal with the public in a polite manner.
  • Knowledge of hand tools and simple equipment used in performing assigned jobs.
  • Able to perform strenuous labor under extreme weather conditions typical of south Texas and under extreme working conditions.
  • Able to perform work tasks while bending, standing, kneeling, squatting, lifting, twisting, reaching, or sitting.
  • Sufficient physical strength, coordination, and agility to lift from ground level, move ten feet, and return to point of origin 50lb objects.
Minimum Qualifications :
  • Ability to work weekends, holidays and occasional after-hour assignments.
  • Valid Texas driver's license.
