Train Craftsperson – Maintenance

Effective immediately there is an opening for a Craftsperson in the Train Department. A Train Craftsperson is responsible for skilled and semi-skilled labor tasks in a wide variety of job assignments including the train. The Train Craftsperson reports to the Maintenance Supervisor and works closely with the Train Mechanic on a daily basis.

 

Essential Functions

  • Establish and maintain positive, cooperative, and effective working relations with fellow employees.
  • Constantly exhibit a customer service attitude, a smile, and an obvious interest in visitor comfort and service.
  • Communicate with the public in a courteous and tactful manner and assist visitors with questions and directions to various areas of the Zoo. 
    Address the visitor - do not wait to be asked.
  • Remove trash and debris from public areas; i.e. pick up litter whenever you see it.
  • Operate jackhammer, paving breaker, or cement mixer.
  • Construct concrete forms, mixing and pouring concrete.
  • Prepare and patch driveway and walkway surfaces.
  • Operate safely Zoo vehicles including dump, pick up, and flatbed trucks; front end loader, forklift, bobcat, and the train.
  • Assure the train, coaches, and equipment are kept in safe and proper repair.
  • Maintain and perform maintenance repairs on the Zoo trains, vehicles, equipment, and buildings.
  • Perform various maintenance tasks in general plumbing, electrical and carpentry, such as replace hose bibs, light switches, door hinges, measuring, marking and cutting dimension lumber, connect wood and metal structural material using common fasteners.
  • Order materials as necessary, including ballast, ties, splice bars.
  • Oversee a job assignment and ensure job assignments are thoroughly and adequately completed.
  • Any and all other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Able to read, write, and understand English.
  • Knowledge of hand tools and simple equipment used in performing assigned jobs.
  • Able to perform strenuous labor under extreme weather conditions typical of south Texas and under extreme working conditions.
  • Able to understand, foresee, and safely apply safety precautions applicable to the task.
  • Able to perform work tasks while bending, standing, kneeling, squatting, lifting, twisting, reaching, or sitting.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ability to work weekends, holidays and occasional after-hour assignments.

  • Valid Texas driver's license and clean driving record.
  • Associate degree preferred.
  • One-year trade experience including the use of tools and equipment.
  • Knowledge of narrow gauge railroad and trains a plus.
  • Must be able to complete Zoo train operator’s certification.
