Visitor Services

Nature of Work

The San Antonio Zoo is now interviewing for employment in visitor services. These areas include novelty and food concessions. Must be at least 15 years of age. Some cash handling experience is preferred, but not necessary.

The Visitor Services Clerk has more direct visitor contact than any other single group of Zoo employees and must constantly exhibit a customer service attitude and obvious interest in visitor assistance. They performs tasks related to counter sales, food preparation, presentation, cooking, stocking, beverage drawing, cash handling, and sanitizing. The Visitor Services Clerk will frequently handle large sums of money during the work shift.

Essential Functions:

  • Establish and maintain positive, cooperative, and effective working relations with fellow employees.
  • Constantly exhibit a customer service attitude, a smile, and an obvious interest in visitor comfort and service.
  • Communicate with the public in a courteous and tactful manner and assist visitors with questions and directions to various areas of the Zoo. Address the visitor - do not wait to be asked.
  • Remove trash and debris from public areas; i.e. pick up litter whenever you see it.
  • Receive cash, checks, and credit cards from the visiting public in payment for merchandise.
  • Count money to verify amounts, make change, and issue receipts to customers.
  • Read and record totals on cash register.
  • Prepare forms to order merchandise and supplies from the concession warehouse for the concession sales stands.
  • Coordinate with concession warehouse personnel to insure accurate and timely monthly inventories.
  • Read and understand the Visitor Services manual.
  • Any and all other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities :

  • Able to handle small and large sums of money and accurately make change.
  • Able to lift from ground level a 30 lb. weight, move it 10 feet and carefully place it on a standing counter work table.
  • Sufficient physical dexterity and mobility to perform standard sales tasks within the confined areas of the several concession stands.
  • Able to constantly demonstrate honesty in day-to-day performance.
Minimum Qualifications :
  • Ability to work weekends, holidays and occasional after-hour assignments.
  • High school graduate or GED certificate or if currently in high school, completion of 10th grade and at least 15 years of age.
  • Six (6) months of money handling experience is highly desirable.
