Water Control Technician

Effective immediately there is an opening for a Water Control Technician (starting pay $9.60/hour) in the Maintenance Department. The Water Control Technician is responsible for installation, maintenance and servicing of plumbing and heating systems. The Water Control Technician is responsible for maintaining the water quality throughout the Zoo.  The Water Control Technician reports to the Maintenance Supervisors.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Establish and maintain positive, cooperative, and effective working relations with fellow employees.
  • Constantly exhibit a customer service attitude, a smile, and an obvious interest in visitor comfort and service.
  • Communicate with the public in a courteous and tactful manner and assist visitors with questions and directions to various areas of the Zoo.  Address the visitor - do not wait to be asked.
  • Remove trash and debris from public areas; i.e. pick up litter whenever you see it.
  • Installation of new plumbing including pipes, values, vents and drains, and a variety of fixtures and equipment.
  • Repairs and maintains existing cleaning traps, drains and other lines.
  • Repairs plumbing and heating systems as needed.
  • Maintain the potable water system in best condition for water conservation.
  • Responsible for water quality throughout the Zoo; including testing and treating with chemicals as needed and maintenance of pumps and equipment associated with water treatment.
  • Monitor the Zoo’s well water system.
  • Any and all other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to use the common tools of the trade, and the ability to learn the use of more complex tool.
  • Sufficient strength and stamina to work digging extended periods of time.
  • Ability to understand oral and written instructions.
  • Knowledge of various types of filtration systems.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to work weekends, holidays and occasional after-hour assignments.
  • Valid Texas driver's license.
  • High School graduate or G. E. D. certificate.
  • Able to obtain backflow license within six months of employment.
  • Two years experience in plumbing work.  High plumbing aptitude may be substituted for experience.
