ZOO GREETER (PT)
Starting pay $7.44/hour

Nature of Work

The Zoo Greeter performs task related to being a host for San Antonio Zoo guests, school children and the general public. A Greeter explains what guests can expect to see, helps them plan their visit, explains Zoo etiquette, answers operational questions, and provides awesome customer service in a friendly manner. A Greeter welcomes guests into the Zoo, shares information, maps, entertains questions, and promotes goodwill throughout the facility. The Zoo Greeter works in the front of the zoo and as needed at various other locations inside the Zoo. A Zoo Greeter may be required to work anytime the Zoo is open. The Zoo Greeter reports to the Education Supervisor for Guest Encounters.

Essential Functions:

  • Establish and maintain positive, cooperative, and effective working relations with fellow employees.
  • Constantly exhibit a customer service attitude, a smile, and an obvious interest in visitor comfort and service.
  • Communicate with the public in a courteous and tactful manner and assist visitors with questions and directions to various areas of the Zoo. Address the visitor - do not wait to be asked.
  • Remove trash and debris from public areas; i.e. pick up litter whenever you see it.
  • Welcome general guests, answer questions and explain special points of interest or events.
  • Welcome school groups and provide a brief orientation that explains Zoo policies.
  • Monitor guests and inform staff of any guest needs, questions or concerns.
  • Meet and greet Zoo guests in a friendly and positive manner and be an instant welcoming resource, going out of the way to welcome guests.
  • Foster and promote enthusiasm for the Zoo.
  • Communicate Zoo rules in a friendly manner.
  • Any and all other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities :

  • Ability to talk informally to children and adults, both in large groups and one-on-one.
  • Knowledge and experience in interpretive techniques or a willingness to learn.
  • Demonstrate a willingness to learn and to keep current with the Zoo updates.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate information in an informal setting, such that it is personal and relevant to guests.
  • Proven oral communication skills, including one-on-one delivery, group delivery and informal microphone presentations.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to work outdoors all day in all weather conditions.
Minimum Qualifications :
  • Ability to work weekends, holidays, and occasional after-hours assignments.
  • At least 18 years of age.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Some college or tutoring experience a plus.
  • English/Spanish bilingual a plus.
