Congratulations Bo DePena on your winning photo of "Kutu," our white rhinoceros. Take a look at "Kutu's" wide mouth. While black rhinoceros have a narrow, prehensile lip, which comes in handy for pulling leaves and shrubs, white rhinos have a flatter, wider lip that is perfect for grazing on grass. Learn more about "Kutu" and white rhinos on your next visit to the Zoo!

Want to see YOUR photo highlighted in our monthly e-newsletter? Submit your favorite Zoo photo to ecastillo@sazoo.org for a chance to have it showcased! One entry per person, per month, please.

Flamingo Chicks Abound at Zoo!

Since 1979, the San Antonio Zoo has had a long history of hand-raising flamingo chicks and has established the standard of care necessary for success that is modeled by many other Zoos all over the United States. 2014 has proven to be another record-breaking season with over 40 chicks raised at our Zoo, both parent-reared on exhibit and hand-raised in the Zoo’s brooder room. Hand-raising these babies is no small task, as keepers provide constant care from 6:30 a.m to 10:30 p.m throughout the breeding season. The flamingos produced this year will eventually be moved to other Zoos for exhibit and breeding purposes.

Come see our adorable Caribbean flamingo chicks currently being parent-reared on exhibit at the front of the Zoo. They provide an excellent photo opportunity and are a guest favorite.

See How YOU Can Help the 96Elephants Campaign!

The 96Elephants campaign is starting to gaining momentum, especially here at YOUR San Antonio Zoo!  We are currently collecting signatures and kids' drawings to be sent to Texas legislatures in early August. Our goal is to have 960 personalized drawings! You can participate by stopping by the 96Elephants booth located in front of Africa Live! every Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and don't forget to bring your drawings.  The last day you can help with this very important campaign is August 9, 2014. Your signatures can help save the elephants!
